In today’s world, our lives tend to be more “yang” in nature: active, fast paced, competitive. Yin yoga is a wonderful practice to help slow down and balance our yang way of life. This type of yoga focuses on structures deeper than the muscles: the tendons, ligaments, and joints. Longer holds of about 3-5 minutes for each posture allow for these structures to feel a sense of opening and release. Most postures are seated or reclining, however a few standing postures are also used. The anatomical focus of a Yin Yoga class is typically the hips and lower back, however Yin Yoga can also be utilized to help open and release the upper body. Suitable for all levels, modifications and props are given to allow student to release fully into the postures for optimal benefit.
